What is the new moon moment?
The new moon moment is the exact time when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align, with the Moon between the Sun and Earth.
At this moment the dark side of the Moon faces Earth, so the Moon is usually not visible.
Role in the lunar calendar
First lunar day rule
The local day containing the new moon moment is counted as day 1 of that lunar month.
Month length
The interval between two new moons is about 29.53 days, producing 30-day full months or 29-day short months.
Local calendar offset
Because the new moon is an absolute UTC moment, converting it to local time zones can produce different dates:
| Country | Time zone | Result (example: new moon at 23:30) |
|---|---|---|
| Vietnam | UTC+7 | Day 1 is Dec 31 |
| China | UTC+8 | Day 1 is Jan 1 (next day) |
