I Ching Interpretation

Symbolism & Structure

The Pure Earth hexagram consists of the lower trigram Kun (Earth) and the upper trigram also being Kun (Earth). In the I Ching, Kun is the second hexagram, representing Yin energy, softness, and compliance. It is the perfect complement to Qian (Heaven). While Heaven creates, Earth sustains. The image of the vast earth suggests a capacity to carry and nourish all beings without discrimination.

Philosophy & Virtues

Kun represents the 'docility of a mare.' It suggests that success comes not from leading but from following. One should find a leader to follow and a path to serve. 'If the superior man takes the initiative, he goes astray; if he follows, he finds guidance.' The strength of Kun lies in its ability to endure and support.

Line by Line Analysis

1st Line

1st Line: 'When there is hoarfrost underfoot, solid ice is not far off.' A warning of small signs leading to major consequences. Be mindful of the first steps of decline or change.

2nd Line

2nd Line: 'Straight, square, great. Without purpose, yet nothing remains unfurthered.' Being naturally upright and honest. One succeeds by being true to their nature without needing artificial effort.

3rd Line

3rd Line: 'Hidden lines. One is able to remain persevering. If one is in the service of a king, seek not works, but bring to completion.' Do not seek personal fame. Focus on completing the task and serving the greater good.

4th Line

4th Line: 'A tied-up sack. No blame, no praise.' Extreme caution and reserve. A time to stay quiet and avoid drawing attention to oneself to remain safe in difficult times.

5th Line

5th Line: 'A yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune.' Yellow is the color of the mean and of the earth. It suggests a position of nobility that remains humble and stays in its proper place.

6th Line

6th Line: 'Dragons fight in the meadow. Their blood is black and yellow.' When Yin tries to usurp the place of Yang, or when the subordinate tries to become the master, a violent conflict ensues where both sides suffer.

All Sixes

All Sixes: 'Lasting perseverance furthers.' Unlike the dragons of Qian who need to avoid having a head, the followers of Kun need to remain consistently devoted and enduring to achieve long-term stability.

Career & Success

You are a valuable team player. Your efforts are recognized for their reliability. If you are looking for promotion, show your ability to manage and support others effectively.

Wealth & Business

Income is steady. Good for long-term savings and low-risk investments. Avoid speculative ventures that promise quick wealth.

Health & Well-being

Strategic Insights

Risk Analysis

The risk of Kun is over-submissiveness or losing one's own identity. While following is a virtue, blind obedience to an unworthy cause leads to stagnation. Also, a hidden ambition (as seen in the 6th line) can lead to ruin.

Strategy

If you are in a situation that requires bold leadership (Qian) but you act with Kun's submissiveness, you will fail to seize the moment. Use Kun's receptivity to gather information, but know when to switch to Qian's action when the time is right.
